Looking into the Refuge
Middle Zone at Full Pool

North Zone at Full Pool
|
Oct -4th-09 - Pumping
looks to have just started,
I could not see any water in the South area, the water is just starting
to flood the area just behind the check station. In the north field
water is starting to just come up in the ditches.
Crops
are in good shape and should provide plenty of cover for the upcoming
season.
The only disappointing thing about this mornings scouting trip was
the lack of birds using the area, but as we all know this can change
in a hurry. |

- Good news from the west side of Saginaw
Bay - Nayanquing
Point's crop conditions for the most part are in great shape the only
area I seen that was a little suspect was area 9. The water levels
on the Bay remain above last years level so field flooding should
not become an issue. |

the buckwheat between the corn strips is just starting to pop through.
Just like every other year, now we wait and hope the weather cooperates

-28-08 --
Area
Update - The
area is in great shape for the waterfowl season opener. Cover is good
and the DNR is pumping water into the refuge with water already in
the zones behind the check station. The north field has good corn
and the water level in the ditches is high, but there was no evidence
of any water in the field yet. I am sure the DNR will be pumping more
water into this field in the next couple of weeks. |

Update - This
mornings area check found that the corn and buckwheat looks to be
in good shape. With still over a month to grow, most of the corn
should offer plenty of cover when hunting season arrives.
The
water in the ditches is also in great shape and should give the
DNR no problems, when pumping begins to fill the refuge and hunting
areas. |

Update - Took a drive to check the
area out the area this morning. Great news, there is water
in the ditches, what a difference a year makes.
The
corn looks like it may have been planted later, than Fish Points
Corn, but it is up and should be just fine if the rains continues,
when it is needed. A big if! |

|
| Sept-02-07 - Crop
Update - The
corn here does not look to be in good shape especially the area right
behind headquarters. The north and south fields seems to be fair.
If you plan on hunting this area this fall you may want to make plans
for additional cover. Water levels here are also low. |
|

|
| Aug-01-07 - Crop
Update - Some
of the corn seems to be good while, other corn in the same field
is small and seems to either be storm damaged, hit with a bug or
disease or is being stressed with a lack of water. What ever it
is, it doesn't look good. The buckwheat in all the areas looks great.
For
those that have not heard that the DNR is recommending that there
be no pre-registered draws for the opener at Fish Point and Nayanquing.
If you are planning to hunt either of these areas the DNR is making
sure that everyone knows there may be no water in the fields

-01 - 06 - Area Update -
Checked all the areas this morning. Crops are still in good shape
and the DNR has started to pump water. Currently there is some water
in the area located behind the check station, see the picture to the
right. The pump that fills the area to the south of the check station
was running but as the picture to the right shows it will be awhile
until there is enough water in the ditch to make an impact. What is
needed is a good strong North East wind to fill the ditches so the
pumps can pump to their capacity. As of this posting there was no
water in the North field and the surrounding ditches are low enough
to indicate that there is no pumping activity at this time for this
area. |

Area Update
- Checked all the areas this morning and the crops are in great shape.
The corn on an average is between 6 and 7 foot tall and in some areas
may be up to 8 foot. The ears are full and are of good size. The DNR
has been busy mowing the trails and parking lots. Overall Nayanquing
looks like it is shaping up to have a good upcoming waterfowl season.
