Holland Sept-3rd-11 - Fished about 1 1/2 hours this past Saturday before a strong wind line blew across lake Michigan. It could have been worse - I am sure the boats that stayed out north of here must of really had a fight with the stong thunder storms that came along with the wind.
We did manage one nice 10 lb. King on a Moonshine Glow Bloody Nose Plug fished 52 feet down over 80 feet of water.

Holland Aug-21st - Made it back out this morning to try and get into some of thise 4 year old King Salmon. We were setting lines straight out in 80 feet of water in a 1 to 2 foot chop at about 6:15am. Our first set up of glow magnum spoons set between 55 and 65 feet down didn't do anything so when there was a little more light we changed the 2 center riggers over to White Spin Doctors and Green Flies down 72 and 75 feet. It was bang bang the first a king about 14 lbs. and the other shook the hook after a short fight.

See that happy fella on the right, he wasn't to happy about 7:30 as he had turned a little green in the 2 footers so we had to call it a day.

Sure was glad he got to get out to see his first king taken. I am sure it won't be his last.

Holland Aug-6th - Hit the water early again today (before daylight) and this time it was worth it. We started settting lines in the dark in 70 feet of water, just north of the pier, with glow spoons on the downriggers, setting them between 35 and 45 feet down, the first small king came on a magnum Moonshine Moonshine spoon set 41 feet down, the next hit came on a magnum Firefly Dreamweaver spoon set 38 feet down. but this one broke off. The mono dipseys were going this morning, our best set up was a Mountain Dew Spin Doctor, with a Catch A Bunch Big Winnie fly that we modifed by replacing the single blood red hooks with one blood red treble set 130 feet back , this rig accounted for 2 more kings, we had the other set up go with the fish taking out more the 50 feet of line before getting off. Our last fish a nice 9 pound laker took a white Spin Doctor we call Oil Slick with a Last Supper Rapture Fly also modified with a blood red treble, set 55 down on one of the center downriggers. We also lost another laker on this same setup just before it got to the net. For the morning we were 4 for 7, with our most productive depth being 95 feet on a south troll. All and all one nice day on the water, other than having to dodge the rain.

Holland July-30th - Hit the water earlier today, having our lines set a litte after 6:00am. Only to find that the fish were still not hitting. Marked quite a few as we trolled. We fished water any where from 70 to 125 feet and setting and adjusting lines up and down from 35 to 75 feet down throughout the morning. Finally at 9:30 we took a nice trout on a Spin Dr and Fly back 180 feet, in front of Saugatuck in 80 feet of water. A few minutes later we spotted a trolling board just floating with no boats any where around it, so with fishing being so slow we turned the boat and managed to net it after a long slow turn. We not only retrieved the board and about 300 yards of copper line - but also a 12 lb king which had a little fight left but not much. If the weather holds we will be back out next weekend searching for those 4 year old kings. Maybe everyone will have better luck next weekend.

Holland July-23rd & 24th -11 - Started to fish for salmon this weekend after a brief absence. Saturday we watched rain and storms cross the big lake at 4:30am by 5:30 we though they had cleared enough to give it a try. After a short drive to the launch some others told us that the waves were breaking over the piers. END OF DAY ONE.

Sunday - there was once again showers on the west shore of the lake but the radar looked as they would swing south and north. We were on the water by 6:30am with friends Chad and Collin. It took no time at all to hook a steelhead who jumped out of the water twice and spit the hook. Trolled all the way to Saugatuck fishing in waters from 70 to 110 feet deep, but no takers. At about 10:00am a report came over the marine radio of a large front pushing across the lake , that's when one of the full cores went and we reeled in a nice 3lb steelie.

Saginaw Bay July-9th-11 - Muck Boy now has its own bay boat, this is in addition to our main boat that we run from the west side of the state for salmon. Over the next year we will be rigging it to fish walleyes in the Saginaw Bay and Saginaw River. When we get it completed we will report out on what we have added. For now we will be using what came with it.

We stat red the morning by setting up west of the #1 Spark Plug, 6 miles out from the mouth of the Saginaw River
in about 22 feet of water, west of the shipping channel.

We managed to take 3 keeper eyes trolling standard size Hot & Tots our best color was a Metallic Gold w/ extra large eyes and Metallic Silver w/ Black Back with a red throat. We trolled them behind mini boards with leads from 40 to 100 feet. The best was from 50 to 60 feet back.

We are hoping to get back out again before we switch back to salmon on Lake Michigan.

Saginaw Bay June-5th-11 - Fished with Muck Boy Reporter Terry Murlick, this morning out of Quanicassee Mi. targeting walleyes. What a great morning weather wise, light south winds and warm temps. We headed north from the river mouth for about five or six miles and set up in 13 feet of water, it didn't take long to get our first walleye, a nice 21 inch fish. But what we didn't know is the walleye would get a serious case of lock jaw for most of this trip, we did manage to get two more and farm another nice one at the boat. We were never board as there was plenty of action catching sheephead and catfish all morning, topped off with one we estimated to be about 12 pounds.

Terry;s favorite way to fish the bay for walleyes is slow trolling crawler harnesses off Off Shore Boards.

We had a great trip and Thank Terry a bunch.

Holland May-21-11 - This was our shake down trip and all systems are go, the boat is running great and we get to put our new Ugly Stick Trolling & Diver Rods to use even though they didn't see any action we really like the feel of these new sticks. Reports from earlier in the week was that most boats had been doing well from this port. But these reports didn't help us as we had another rough start to our Great Lakes fishing season. We didn't even have a bump, we did mark a quite a few fish south of the piers about half way to Saugatuck. We fished from 70 to 90 feet of water. Later in the morning, we did pick up some information that the boats fishing deeper (115 to 165 feet of water) were picking up a few fish. But by this time we had to leave the lake for Saturday Soccer Games. We will be back next week to see if we can get into them.
Apr 19th -2011 - Field Reporter Paul Smith. Omer Mi. - The Crew made our annual Sucker Fishing trip to the Rifle River on April 11th this year. The water levels were starting to drop from flood stage due to storms a few days earlier. The fish weren't jumping out of the river but the bite was steady enough to make it interesting. In 4 to 5 hrs of fishing we brought home 43 for the grinder and smoker. We used store bought crappie rigs or hand tied double hook rigs to rig our crawlers on set (tight) lines. This is always a fun Spring outing for our crew.

Mar 12th -2011 - Field Reporter Paul Smith. Ogemaw Co, The Perch fishing drew us back north for another try at those Jumbo's on the 8th. With the 3 lines per ancler in effect this year we purchased a few of the new HT Ice Riggers so we could utilize our full number of lines per angler. Wth only limited success the few times I had previously used them for Crappies we decided to try 'em for Perch and picked up a few more at Northwoods in Pinconning on our way north when we purchased bait. With a minnow on a tear drop it didn't produce as many fish as our hole hopping, jigging method with jigs tipped with waxies, but it did produce fish and a dandy 12"+ at that. The Riggers are simple to use and will be a regular item on the ice for me as I only have two hands and am now allowed three lines on Michigan waters.

Mar 5th -2011 - Field Reporter Paul Smith. Ogemaw Co, its that time of year when the perch are starting to stage for the spawn so it was time for a road trip North. The fish were spread out around the spotty cabbage weeds near the drop in 10 to 15 fow. The bite was slow but we managed to return home with around 25 nice (8"+) perch of which about a dozen were Jumbo's (10"+) including a couple of "Jalopies" (13+ inches) and about a dozen decent Gills and Sunnies. Hot lures were Moxy Jigs and Ficious Jigs and the dominant colors were orange and white. The ice was about 24" or more on the lake we fished that's 6" to 12" more than we have near home in Genesee Co. as the thaw a few weeks ago ate up quite a bit ice.

Feb 17th -2011 - Field Reporter Paul Smith. -Two trips to the Saginaw River (Saginaw Area) in January sent us home empty handed, although we saw a few keeper walleye carried off the ice when we were there we failed to score. Reports of many undersize fish and a slow bite was common. Silver and Blue Jigging Rapalas seem to be the lure of choice for many of the successful anglers.

Our trips to Lakes in Genesee, Oakland, and Livingston Counties had mixed results for panfish, it seemed to be either a feast or famine situation but the good days out numbered the bad 5 to 1. Many days our sonar units were lit up like christmas trees as the fish were stacked up beneath us, with the bluegills biting readily. The ice thickness was a solid 1.5 to 2 foot on the lakes we fished making hauling out the power auger a necessity. Our lures of choice were Bobber Fry (Jammin Jigs), Fat Boy (Lindy Tackle), Demon Jigs (Custom Jig & Spin), and Wolfram 3mm Jigs (Fiska). Colors varied but chartreuse, orange, and green combos were usually tied on the fine 2lb test we use.

Fish on Flasher

Limit of Gills
Genesee & Livingston Co. 1-6-2011 - Field Reporter Paul Smith. - Ice fishing has been pretty good. We were out on the ice December 16th (one day earlier than last year). The first three weeks of ice has been fairly productive for panfish. The ice formed fast with 6" in sheltered areas on the 16th and now we have 8 - 10" on the inland lakes The bluegills as a rule have been willing to bite. Having good luck using Lindy's Fat Boy, Custom Jigs and Spins Demon, and Jammin' Jigs Bobber Fry jigs in chartreuse/green and chartreuse/orange combos. Wax Worms have been the choice of bait for tipping the jigs. I have really been impressed with the Marcum LX-5 flasher I purchased last year so much so that I have retired my near 20 year old Vexilar FL-8 (have to give an A+ for durability). The display on the LX-5 is brighter, target seperation is finer, it has an anywhere in the water column zoom feature, and a great interference rejection system when fishing near other sonar units.
